ISLAMABAD – Ousted prime minister Imran Khan raised more than Rs5 billion for Pakistan’s flood victims during a live international telethon, which continued for three hours on Monday night.

Floods have wreaked havoc in most parts of Pakistan. Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh and parts of Punjab have been worst hit by the floods triggered by heavy monsoon rains. As of August 29, at least 1,000 people have died in the floods and around 33 million have been affected. In addition, property worth $10 billion has been destroyed by these floods.

Soon after the telethon started, it became a top trend on Twitter and social media users started sharing regular updates on the fundraising. The event was moderated by Senator Faisal Javed Khan, a key leader of Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Parvez Elahi also attended the event.

Earlier, Khan came under fire for saying he was under a lot of pressure to raise funds for the flood-hit people of Pakistan, but he would not do any fundraising until and unless he knows how these funds would be used and who would ensure effective use of these funds.

In a related development, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javaid Bajwa too have made separate appeals to people to donate generously for the people affected by the floods. However, there’s no confirmation how much amount these two most powerful functionaries of the state of Pakistan have collected so far.
