ISLAMABAD —Supreme Court Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial has taken suo motu notice of the prevailing political situation in the country.

Pakistan plunged into a constitutional and political crisis once again after National Assembly acting speaker Qasim Khan Suri declared the no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan unconstitutional, hence null and void.

The united opposition, mainly consisting of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), had submitted a no-confidence motion against the prime minister last month and the parliament was set to vote on it on Sunday (today).

Soon after Suri dismissed the no-confidence motion as unconstitutional on the ground that it was sponsored by a foreign power that was working on regime change in Pakistan, Prime Minister Imran Khan appeared on the state-run Pakistan Television (PTV) to address the nation.

Khan congratulated the nation on dismissal of the no-confidence motion against him as unconstitutional and said he has sent an advice to the president of Pakistan to dissolve the assembly. He also told people to prepare for the fresh elections and vowed to make a comeback.

In line with prime minister’s advice, President Arif Alvi dissolved the National Assembly of Pakistan.
