ISLAMABAD – A day after Prime Minister Imran Khan was ousted from power through a no-confidence motion, opposition parties elected Shehbaz Sharif the new prime minister of Pakistan on Monday.

Sharif, who is president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), was elected 23rd prime minister of Pakistan with the help of 174 votes cast by lawmakers from various opposition parties, which have been part of the struggle to oust Prime Minister Khan.

Shehbaz has earlier served as chief minister of Punjab and leader of the opposition in the National Assembly.

Moments before voting to elect the new prime minister started, Khan’s party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), resigned en masse from the National Assembly and distanced itself completely from the election process.

The PTI believes that Khan was ousted from power through a US-sponsored regime-change plan, the new government is an “imported government” and a stooge of the United States.
