LAHORE – As supporters of the ousted prime minister Imran Khan marched from The Mall to the Cantonment, the army deployed armed personnel and tanks on the entrance to the neighbourhood, which mainly houses key installations and offices of the Pakistan Army.

In a video now circulating on social media, vehicles can be seen entering the Cantonment area with armed soldiers standing alert in multiple rows and people standing on both sides of the road.

The development came before former prime minister Imran Khan began addressing the nation from the hospital bed for the first time since he was wounded in a gun attack during his party’s long march to Islamabad on Thursday.

However, there were no reports of any clashes between the protesters and the military personnel.

Khan’s supporters are protesting on the streets against the attempt on his life. In his address to the nation on Friday evening, Khan said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah and Major General Faisal Naseer of the Pakistan Army were masterminds of the plot to kill him.

He called upon his supporters to continue the protests until these three accused resign from their offices and submit themselves for investigation. He also said he would take to the streets again as soon as he recovers from bullet injuries.
