GCU Lahore sets up agriculture department, appoints Dr Haider Ali as head

LAHORE – The Government College University (GCU) has set up an agriculture department on its new campus in the Punjab capital.

Taking to Twitter on Sunday, GCU Lahore Vice-Chancellor Asghar Zaidi said the university has set up the agriculture department on its new campus in Lahore to work on food security. He said the agriculture department at the GCU Lahore will work to modernise the agriculture sector in Pakistan. He said the agriculture department at the GCU Lahore will offer admissions in BS, MS and PhD programmes in agronomy, horticulture, soil sciences, plant breeding and genetics, plant pathology and food sciences and technology.

Prof Asghar Zaidi said that Dr Hafiz Haider Ali has been appointed the first head of the agriculture department at the GCU Lahore. He said that Pakistan needs to explore new agriculture techniques to tackle issues like low yield and climate change. He said that agriculture education and research are the two most urgent things required to address the issues facing the agriculture sector in Pakistan and make agriculture sustainable.

A good number of Twitter users praised Prof Asghar Zaidi for taking such an initiative and gave some suggestion for improvement in the quality of agriculture education in Pakistan.

Dr. Abdul Wakeel (@AbdulWakeelAZH) wrote, “Although there is saturation of Agricultural Graduates, however quality graduate are nowhere in Pakistan. Starting an Agriculture Degree program at GC Lahore will be challenging. You can only create space with high quality. May Allah bless you.”

The Government College University is a public research university located in Lahore. Opened as Government College in 1864, it was given the status of a university in 2002.
