Markandey Katju, a former judge of the Supreme Court of India, has given the Pakistani government a hilarious idea to evade the court orders on general elections in Punjab.

Responding to a tweet by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Chaudhry Fawad Hussain, Katju wrote, “I have a brilliant idea which can save the PDM Govt. They shud announce they have received confirmed information that the 3 judges who fixed 14th May for holding the Punjab elections were paid by India to give this verdict, & so such purchased order can obviously not be accepted.”

Hussain, who served as federal information minister and then the minister for science and technology in the PTI government from 2018 to 2022, has warned the powerful ruling elite of Pakistan against rendering the constitution useless and pushing the masses to the wall.

Taking to Twitter, Hussain said, “If the Supreme Court’s orders for elections are not implemented and an attempt is made to render the Supreme Court a useless institution like the Election Commission, people will have no choice but to start a revolution. [People] will have to wrap burial shrouds around their heads and march on Islamabad. Our struggle so far has been within the boundaries of the constitution, but if the constitution ceases to exist, there will be no limits for our struggle. Therefore, sanctity of the constitution should be accepted and people should not be pushed to the wall.”

Katju has been closely watching the political developments in Pakistan recently and sharing his thoughts on Twitter. Earlier on Saturday, Katju slammed Pakistan’s former president Asif Ali Zardari for demanding elections in the National Assembly and provincial assembly constituencies across Pakistan on the same day.

Katju tweeted, “Asif Zardari is talking nonsense. Der is no provision in Pakistan Const which says Parliamentary&Provincial Assembly elections must be held together. Article 224(2) says elections2Provincial Assembly elections must be held within 90 days of dissolution.”

Katju also responded to those calling for supremacy of the parliament in Pakistan. He wrote, “Those in Pakistan who say Parliament is supreme forget this rule applies only in countries with unwritten Constitution eg UK. It dos not apply where there is a written Constitution eg USA,India,Pakistan etc.”
