Covid-19 cases surge as Pakistan races to get people vaccinated

Another 5,026 people have tested positive for Covid-19 across Pakistan in 24 hours, the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) said on Sunday.

According to the NCOC, which monitors the coronavirus situation in Pakistan and makes policies to curb the pandemic, the deadly virus claimed 62 lives in different parts of the country in 24 hours. The coronavirus watchdog says that Pakistan conducted 56,965 tests in 24 hours and the positivity rate stood at 8.82 percent.

Amid a sharp increase in the number of coronavirus cases in the country, Pakistan continues to administer Covid-19 vaccine to its citizens on a war footing. On July 31 alone, the authorities administered coronavirus vaccine to 934,717 people.

As of July 31, the total number of people who have been administered the coronavirus vaccine was 30.59 million (30,590,183).

Federal Minister for Planning and Development Asad Umar also gave a breakup of how people started getting vaccinated slowly and then how the process sped up over the last three months.

He tweeted, “Pakistan has crossed 3 crore vaccinations. The first crore took 113 days. The second 28 days and the 3rd only 16 days. Pace has rapidly increased. All 6 days this week were a record. 9 lakh 34 thousand vaccinations yesterday. In last 6 days 5 million vaccinations were done.”
