LAHORE – Punjab Police Inspector General (IG) Amir Zulfiqar Khan has said that eradicating crime and ensuring protection to citizens’ lives and properties is his top priority and no omission will be intolerable in this regard.

The Punjab Police IG expressed his concern over the crime situation across the province and said that reporting all is good will not work. He said that practical steps have to be taken and crime control has to be the only measure to evaluate the performance of the officers. He said that his policy is, “You work, you stay.” So, the officer who does good work will stay on his post, he said.

Presiding over the first RPOs conference at the Central Police Office on Saturday after assuming charge as Punjab Police IG this week, Amir Zulfiqar Khan told the officers to perform their duties according to the law. He said there would be no compromise on discipline of the Punjab Police. Giving the task of monitoring the performance of the officers to the Special Branch, IG Khan said a report should be submitted to him on a daily basis. He said that foolproof security should be provided for Christmas and Quaid-e-Azam Day celebrations across the province.

In view of the recent wave of terrorism, Khan said that security of sensitive and public places should be re-evaluated in Punjab. He said that CTD Punjab should take special measures to wipe out terrorists from the province completely. He said that special squads of police should be formed to maintain the law and order on New Year’s Night and strict legal action should be taken against the people resorting to aerial firing, doing wheelies and inciting rioting.

During the conference, the Punjab IG was told that 28,000 officers and personnel would perform security duty during the Quaid-e-Azam Day and Christmas celebrations across the province. More than 6,000 officers and officials will perform duties in the provincial capital Lahore, he was informed.

The IG said that senior officers should go out in the field and review the security arrangements at the sensitive places of worship. He said that additional personnel should be deployed and special measures must be taken in Murree in view of the extra rush of tourists during the snowfall season.

IG Amir Zulfiqar Khan directed RPOs, DPOs and field officers to leave their offices and make surprise visits to police stations. He said that welfare of the force was his first priority therefore field officers should hold regular meetings to address the issues facing the police force.
