Maryam calls for re-election in NA-75 a day after violent by-poll in Daska

PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz says the PTI government manipulated the by-election in Daska.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz on Saturday called for re-election in the NA-75 constituency where the by-election on February 19 was marred by controversy.

Addressing a press conference in the PML-N stronghold of Lahore a day after Friday’s violent and controversial by-election in the Daska area of Sialkot District, Maryam accused the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) of manipulating the electoral process. She said the government intentionally slowed down the voting process and halted voting at the polling stations where her party was winning.

Maryam said that government representatives and the local administration openly interfered in the by-election where PML-N’s Syeda Nosheen Iftikhar and PTI’s Ali Asjad Malhi were in the run. She said now the government would see another face of Maryam and added that the PML-N would not let the ruling party escape from this contest. She said that staff was kidnapped at some polling stations during the election process.

The PML-N leader, who is the daughter for three-time prime minister Nawaz Sharif who is currently living in exile in London, said the PTI candidate in the NA-75 constituency and his relatives were involved in incidents of aerial firing during the by-election. She said she was pleasantly surprised at the stance of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on the controversial by-election.
