LAHORE — As the smog crisis remains unaddressed in Lahore and many other parts of Punjab, the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday directed the Punjab education authorities to extend winter vacation at Lahore schools for one more week.

The LHC passed these orders while hearing the petitions seeking smog remedies.

The court said it was government’s duty to address the issue of smog. The court directed the authorities to extend the winter vacation for one more week.

The hearing on the pleas was adjourned until next Friday.

Earlier, the Punjab government notified three weekly off days at schools in the provincial capital due to extreme smog.

“All schools of Lahore would remain closed on Friday, Saturday and Sunday,” the official notification read.

“The decision of three weekly off days would remain in force till the next order,” the government announced.

The provincial government had notified three weekly off days at Lahore schools on the Lahore High Court’s orders.

Smoke from vehicles, factories and burning of the remains of crops has been the major cause for dense smog in various cities in the beginning of the winter season.

Punjab has been badly hit by such weather conditions in recent years.
