SYDNEY – Pakistan cricket team’s victory against New Zealand on Wednesday brought the much-needed relief for the Babar Azam-led squad, which has been facing a severe backlash after losing a crucial match to arch-rival India and then another to a weaker team like Zimbabwe.

Pakistani cricket fans were trying to forget the green shirts’ poor performance in the match against India in the early phase of the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 when the team lost another match to Zimbabwe and was almost thrown out of the tournament.

This defeat of the Pakistani cricket team triggered a meme festival on social media and left the Pakistani cricket fans fuming. So much so that the Zimbabwean president took a swipe at Pakistan after his team didn’t allow the Babar Azam and company to achieve even a 130-run target.

After the two defeats, Pakistan team was absolutely at the mercy of other teams. The Netherlands’ unexpected win over South Africa brought the Pakistani team back into the tournament and finally Pakistan played the semi-final against New Zealand and won it.

Addressing a post-match press conference after beating New Zealand in the first semi-final of the T20 World Cup in Sydney on Wednesday, Babar admitted that Pakistan’s start in the tournament was not good.

“There are ups and downs in cricket, but I believed that we would stage a comeback. I have to thank my team management as they kept my morale high,” Babar said.

No matter which team Pakistan faces in the final, India or England, the Pakistani team would give its 100%, he said.

Lamenting criticism, he said that people denounced the team for its poor performance. “If the captain is being criticised, it means the team too is being criticised.”

“You can definitely criticise, but refrain from getting personal. Critics should now enjoy as the team has reached the final,” he added.
